Reese Witherspoon looked to her Southern roots when launching her new perfume line, In Bloom,
with cosmetic powerhouse Avon. Reese says the name captures this particular time in her life where she is blooming both professionally and personally. The actual scent of the perfume was inspired by her childhood in Tennessee. The A-list actress spoke with Beauty Undercover about developing the sophisticated scent.
Beauty Undercover: In mixing up the perfume did you look back to your childhood in Tennessee?
Reese Witherspoon: My childhood was spent in the front yard in a gigantic magnolia tree.
I knew it had to have magnolia blossom in it. Also, my mother always wore gardenia perfume so
I’ve always been attracted to white flowers. We added other flowers and softened it a bit and made it very sophisticated.
BU: Did your daughter have any input?
RW: Ava and I had a lot of fun one afternoon sort of smelling different things. It was really inspiring seeing a 7-year old (at the time she was seven) giving me her opinion on various scents.
BU: How long did it take to develop?
RW: It was about two years with everything from creating the bottle to the final scent. We wanted to make sure everyone enjoyed it and it wasn’t just something I enjoyed (laughter).
BU: How do you want women to feel when they put it on?
RW: Being a working mother, I think it’s important to realize that people don’t go home to change their fragrance. So I wanted it to go from day-to-night. I think the person who wears it should feel confident. I wanted it to be something was that very easy to wear and not too heavy.
BU: You describe yourself as a girlie-girl who loves makeup and fragrance. What do you love most about the world of beauty?
RW: I think it can be transformative the kind of impact it can have on people, not to mention myself. I wake up in the morning and I’m like ugh, I can’t believe I have to go on a talk show. Then I get to work with these fantastic makeup artists and I’m like, this really is a transformation! It can do wonderful things for your self-esteem and I always say if it makes you feel good, go for it. I think it’s important you feel your best – whether looking your best or just feeling confident because you have a great perfume on.
BU: The bottle is beautiful!
RW: Thank you. I really like it. I think it turned out beautifully, and I like that we incorporated a monogram. Because I’m so Southern, I have to put my name on everything!
