THE VARNISHED TRUTH

nail_polishMichelle Mismas in the Imelda Marcos of nail polish.  But rather than collect shoes, she covets nail polish.  Michelle has some 15-hundred bottles in her Cleveland home which are confined to one room.  You see her boyfriend insists the polish remain in one part of the house. “I sound like a crazy person, don’t I,” she asks with a self-deprecating laugh.
But her obsession with nail polish turned into a stroke of genius when she started the blog, All Lacquered Up

The self-described “Math & Science girl” was working as an accountant in her families business when she decided to start blogging about polish three years ago.  Today, she works full-time on All Lacquered up, has over 100-thousand visitors a month and even collaborated with Barielle on a nail polish line baring her blogs name.

Michelle can rattle off nail polish colors from the different decades the way a sports fanatic might throw out stats. “Rescue Beauty Lounge Mismas, I love China Glaze Emerald Sparkle and Rainforest from the 90’s” she sputters, and then adds confidentially, “I can usually tell what nail polish color someone is wearing when I meet them.”

Her ultimate job would be to pick names for nail polish.  Michelle credits OPI with coming up with the most clever bottle titles in the business.  “OPI has the best names because they are so witty.”

Michelle thinks of nail polish as the ultimate inexpensive accessory that can add the perfect pop. “You many not buy the Chanel bag for $2300 but you can pick up the $23 nail polish.”

Below are her holiday nail polish picks:

Daring: Mint green or emerald green

Classic: Red (She suggests China Glaze:  Ruby Pumps (Modeled after slipper from Wizard of Oz slippers.)

Conservative: Shimmering nude

For the home manicurist:  Less is more.  “The biggest mistake is having too much polish on the brush,” says the nail guru emphatically. “Go with thin coats since thick coats cause bubbles and chipping.”

We all have our obsessions, don’t we? Besides, people like that come in handy for the rest of us ;-)

She sounds hilarious, I will definitely check out her blog! And I agree, OPI had the best names :-)

Michelle rules. I never imagined there could be so mush to learn about nail polish. I have a
similar passion for purple as her’s for green.

Now, I am a regular reader of ALU and I like Michelle very much, which is why I have misgivings about your opening passage.

Your article is well-meaning, I’m sure, but being compared to Imelda Marcos – a woman known at best for the hundreds of charges (some ten still pending) filed against her and her dictatorial husband, tax evasion, excess, and callous disregard of the needs of the poor and hungry of her constituents – is a pretty backhanded compliment. This woman spent hundreds of millions of public funds on projects that were all about public image, and very rarely about addressing the true needs of the public: witness the “Manila Film Center” debacle. When questioned about her incredible excess, she said it was her “duty” to be “some kind of light, a star to give [the poor] guidelines.” In other words, let them eat cake.

Again, I’m sure all you meant was “Imelda Marcos has a lot of shoes: Michelle Mismas has a lot of polishes,” and in no way intended to reflect anything beyond that. The problem is that when I hear the name “Imelda Marcos,” I think of someone who was narcisstic, a supporter of a dictata conspicuous consumer of the worst degree, and a probable criminal.
