In a town where power is measured by proximity to celebrities you can bet doctors, hair stylists and makeup artists are scrambling to be part of an A-listers entourage this week. Under the glare of the lens actresses must be ready for their close-ups. And it’s not just about the dress — one must be completely intact from head-to-toe.
So let’s start at the bottom of the primping process. When women around Hollywood say they need a fill, they’re not necessarily talking about injections in their face but about their feet. The treatment of the moment, called “pillow injections,” has women who can’t sustain hours in their stilettos padding their feet with Restalyne or Radiesse. By injecting filler, it gives the ball of the foot the feeling of wearing a Dr. Scholl’s pad.
Pads play a big role on this particular evening since a little stuffing in the bra can create the perfect cleavage. Before getting into that Carolina Herrera dress one must slip on proper underpinnings to make it look just right.
Since a line of Lycra-based body shapers named Spanx squeezed onto the scene, the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks have been sucking it up for the red carpet. “It’s all about the right underpinnings,” says celebrity stylist, Elizabeth Stewart who is doing countless fittings before the big night. “We also use breast tape (Bring It Up) and those ever crucial nipple covers (only the silicone kind work).”
With the leftover Restalyne from the feet why not throw a little in the face and add some Botox too? But use the Italian needles (for the injections) since they’re far more delicate and create less bruising. And almost every actress in Hollywood has come to depend on hair extensions to give her lackluster mane some oomph.
Of course there are the last minute appointments to take care of brows, waxing, spray tans, facials, fake eyelashes, pedicures and manicures.
Then just put on the dress and load up the clutch. The three most crucial items in the bag – blackberry, lipstick and an alcohol pad, just in case there’s any sweating – it’s a trick in Hollywood that kills off any kind of body odor immediately. Armed with this battle ready clutch, don’t forget to then drape on the heavy armor: the jewels, darling, the jewels – designers like Lorraine Schwartz and Neil Lane are always in fashion.
