Scientists in Australia have just delivered some unsettling news for those of us who love our high heels. In results published last week in The Journal of Applied Physiology, the scientists found that heel wearers moved with shorter, more forceful strides, their feet perpetually in a flexed, toes-pointed position. This movement pattern continued even when the women kicked off their heels and walked barefoot. As a result, the fibers in their calf muscles had shortened and they put much greater mechanical strain on their calf muscles than the control group did. We still can’t give up our heels! Read more.
I could have told this to anyone that would have listened to me. My aunt had the habit of wearing tiny 3in heels when she was younger and then when she got older she went to a 2in heel. the result ended up that her calf muscles were foreshortened and when she didn’t have to wear heels anymore she had to. She had done so much damage to her legs that she had to wear heeled slippers and they were uncomfortable. After many therapeutic sessions and massage therapy for months she was able to wear 1in heeled shoes and not without pain either. This was back in the 1980′s and ever since then I knew that it was a fool that used these heels to make a statement of fashion and then lived to regret it in later life. I tried to impress this on my own children and it worked for them. Ocassional wearing of these sky-high heels is not going to damage your legs but consistant usage will definately !
Its true! Ive walked into several poles because of high heels.
