MUST-HAVES FROM THE MAKEUP MASTER

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

In Beverly Hills he is referred to simply as Patrick — a single name that in certain circles can make your eyelashes curl (in a good way). Patrick Foley, you see, is a personal shopper at the makeup counter.  He’s thriving at a time when many in the retail business are struggling to stay afloat. ‘‘People don’t feel guilty splurging on makeup,’’ says the 42-year-old personal  cosmetics shopper.

His office/makeup studio can best be described as a beauty junkies paradise.  Not to mention, it’s conveniently located next to women’s shoes.  Foley doesn’t only recommend products for his clients, he shows them how to put it on properly.   Foley loves many of the indie beauty brands.   Below is a list of his five favorite Spring products:

Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment
3Lab “M” Cream
Yves Saint Laurent Matt Touch Foundation
Sue Devitt Lip Intensifier Pencil
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

LASER AWAY STRETCH MARKS

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

A cool laser is the latest weapon against stretch marks.  According to Beverly Hills expert, Dr. Simon Ourian, the Coolbeam laser is the most effective tool for diminishing the look of stretch marks.  The price for this privilege is between $300 to $1000 a pop, with women needing between three to six treatments to notice a difference.   Usually patients say it isn’t very painful but one does feel a stinging sensation.  “Patients typically liken it to the snapping of a rubber band,”  explain Dr. Ourian. Some patients prefer using a numbing cream while others are more macho and need no topical anesthetic.  The video below demonstrates how the Coolbeam works.

THE POLITICS OF TIPPING

Monday, March 15th, 2010

By Lisa Gache
In the late 50’s the queen of etiquette, Emily Post declared people should tip between 15-20-percent across the board.  While that still holds true, in the past five decades a lot has changed.  Who knew we’d be encountering up to four people before leaving a hair salon with perfectly coiffed hair? In some cases, there’s the stylist, the assistant to the stylist, the person who shampoos your hair and the one who blows it out.  Are you confused?  Well, this is a question that we’re asked all the time at  Beverly Hills Manners.   So here’s the deal on tipping at salons and spas:

The Fancier the Salon the Bigger the Tip.  It goes without saying that if you’re in a “fancy schmancy” salon then you will need to pony up a fancy tip!  For example, if you are going to get your hair cut from a stylist at Andy Lecompte’s salon (stylist to Madonna, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan) than you would be expected to pay a higher tip (since the price of a cut will be more) than if you were going to a nondescript hair salon in the neighborhood.  And, if a celebrity stylist such as Andy does your hair, then you may be expected to drop as much as $500 for a cut and pay a $100 tip.  That’s 20-percent!!  (They used to say don’t tip the owner of the salon but that rule has changed.)

Tips for everyone! We know the main stylist or colorist gets 20-percent.  For the stylist’s assistant $5-$10 (this figure will vary depending upon the amount of time that is spent and price of the cut).  For the person who is shampooing your hair it should be $5 or less.  Moving on to manicures and pedicures 15-20 percent, facialist or aesthetician 20 percent, massage therapist 15-20 percent and gratuity for gift certificates of 20-percent.   The bottom line is tipping is private, but the more generous the tip, the more the salon or spa will be inclined to squeeze you in on a busy day!  If you’re not happy with a service don’t be intimidated – speak up.  Express how you feel and see if they can rectify the situation.  If they have any kind of attitude than simply reduce the tip by 5-10 percent.

THE NEW BOOB JOB?

bra

This may look like a bra from outer space but really it’s the latest in breast augmentation.  Have you ever wanted to take fat from your bum and put it in your breasts?  That’s now a reality!  According to Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Suzanne Trott, who is a co-investigator in the clinical trials, the  procedure, which has been apparently garnering great success  could soon give the traditional boob job a little competition (if you want to go up one cut size without an implant).   The two-part procedure includes  traditional liposuction, followed by reverse-liposuction  “injections.”  But patients must prepare their breasts for the  procedure by wearing this futuristic bra apparatus, called the Brava  System, for a minimum of 3 weeks before, and several months after.    According to Trott, the success of the procedure is due to the bra and the more sophisticated surgical techniques.  In the past it was difficult to preserve the fat.  But these days by using things like stem cells they are able to keep the grafted fat alive and in place.

RED CARPET DRESS REHEARSAL

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

OscarsOnRedCarpetCall it the cosmetic dress rehearsal — a procedure where a physician shoots saline solution into a patient’s face rather than a real filler. According to Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione in Beverly Hills, during Awards Season, patients come in a few weeks before the Golden Globes or Oscars to preview how it might look and photograph.
Rather than putting in Restalyne or Juviderm (which would last several month), Dr. Simon Ourian injects the saline solution (which is absorbed within an hour) into one side of a patients face.  In the video below the patient was able to compare the before and after.

One of the newest forms of liposuction has patients raving about the quick recovery.   At the REJUVALIFE Vitality Institute in Beverly Hills, Dr. Andre Berger regularly uses Body Jet Water Assisted Lipo.
The water based system (which was recently approved by the FDA) is designed to produce less pain and bruising . “It does the work gently,” says Dr. Berger. ”With less risk of an uneven appearance and the recovery is faster than other forms of lipo.”  The cosmetic surgeon tells patients they can return to work the following day.
The fat is taken in such a way that it makes it ideal for immediate transfer into other parts of the body or face.  There’s no general anesthesia as patients are given oral medication and alert during the entire procedure.  The doctor and patient were so comfortable they invited us in for a quick peak at the lipo treatment.  Take a look.

WHEN BIGGER ISN’T BETTER

Monday, January 25th, 2010

BREASTS1In the wake of Heidi Montag’s multiple procedures, we thought it would be a good time to look at why doctors let patients go too far.  Montag is currently a DD following two  boob-jobs.  On the television show, Extra, she mentioned the possibility of a third surgery to go even bigger.
At Beauty Undercover we don’t always think bigger is better.  Los Angeles is a city known for producing large breast implants, but let’s face it, sometimes it isn’t so attractive – especially when you’re staring at two huge, hard boobs.
According to one Beverly Hills doctor, if they followed something called the five-point measuring system, breast implants would look more natural.  “A lot of doctors throw it out the window and just put huge implants in,” says Dr. Ashkan Ghavami of Beverly Hills, who trained under the Dallas doctor who developed the system. “Sometimes patients want to go bigger than what the measuring system dictates.”
Ghavami thinks physicians need to take into account height, weight and proportions of the breast.  By following these guidelines, he believes there would be fewer corrective surgeries.  We believe there would be fewer people calling surgeons like Dr. Frank Ryan a boob!

GET THE LOOK: HEIDI KLUM

Monday, December 28th, 2009

heidiWe couldn’t help but notice the pictures of Heidi Klum with baby Lou in the hospital!  She looked amazing (which she always does!).  However, it appeared as though she was barely wearing make-up.  Even in the Ann Taylor ads there is that fresh-faced look.  We asked make-up pro Robert Bolanos how to get the look:

On the eye: Concealer all over the lid and set it with a bit of translucent powder.  Try Estee Lauder’s Double-Wear Concealer or Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage.
Liner: Take a flat eyeliner brush and dip it in black/brown shadow and carefully dot underneath the lash line, touching only the roots of the lashes.  Bobbi Brown’s eye shadow in Mahogany.
Shadow: By using a soft caramel or taupe matte eye shadow bring the color to the lash line and start blending all across into the lid and crease area. Maybelline makes a four-in-one group of natural colors.

Mascara: One curl then coat the lashes only once. Robert loves Shu Uemura for both curling and mascara!  Maybelline also makes great mascara.
Foundation: Apply evenly all over the face.  Armani or Covergirl.
Blush: NARS “Orgasm” or Covergirl TruCheeks
Lips: Lips can be a nude matte lipstick, a beautiful flesh toned stain, or a neutral lip pencil lined all over the lips and topped with lip balm, which gives it a less glossy look. Try L’Oreal Riche Lipstick or Face Stockholm color called, Dream.
