SWAG ALERT: GREEN LIGHT

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Today we are giving away 25 Paint & Peel (watermelon) polishes by Sula.  Not only are they environmentally friendly, these beauties peel off when you’re ready to change polish.    The polish stays on anywhere from one-to-three days.

In an effort to make the polish last a week, the company is coming up with a clear coat which will be out in a couple of weeks.   “We’ve been working with a chemist for the past year,” says Susanne Lang, owner of Sula.  “The top coat called, Lasting helps preserve the polish for seven days.”

Since our blasts are going out at different times in the morning , we are going to continue to even the playing field by putting up a green light after the words SWAG ALERT.  Look for it after 11 this morning PST (since we won’t be blasting).  The first 25 subscribers to email info@beautyundercover.comwill win the swag.  Good Luck!

PARTY LIKE YOU’RE FOUR OR AT STUDIO 54

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

painted-nail-front(1)We couldn’t help notice the trail of 4-year-olds clad in their perfect party clothes as they congregated on Ventura Boulevard one Saturday.  We wondered if it was an audition for a new Disney Channel pilot?  Or, perhaps, try-outs for a Junior Beauty Pageant? But alas , it was the latest in a trend of pint-sized parties.
The Painted Nail, Sherman Oaks’s premiere nail salon offers spa packages for all ages in their Karaoke-filled Nail Party Lounge.  The price for the privilege  is $20 per child.  Pint-sized mani/pedi parties offer a fashion-forward trip down a cute runway stage – complete with props, glitter tattoos and even a photo both to capture those precious moments.
But for the older crowd, there is a package that includes martinis and manicures, fueled by customized cupcakes and innovative nail prints. If you want to take it up a little…The Painted Nail Lounge can help you get your groove on  — pole dancing lessons or even a review of male dancers can be arranged by request.   Talk about a full-service salon!

Safe Travels

miniGreat makeup cases are tough to find.  We just want something  where you can (neatly) store everything from makeup to overnight creams to meds.  We’ve found a couple good ones.
A company called Mini Kittour makes a hard covered makeup case complete with travel bottles, a small magnifying mirror, a pill case, a memo pad, a mini sharpie and a passport cover.  It is a bit pricey at around $200, but it holds everything and nothing gets smashed in your carry-on luggage.
A Hollywood favorite is Stephanie Johnson.  The ML Traveler retails for around $80.  The pretty prints are shaped liked an old-fashioned makeup bag.  It comes with two snap-out mesh pouches, removable toiletry pouch and mirror.
Then there’s the Royce Leather Cosmetic Travel Case which is available online at Walmart for $72.  The bottom of the bag has a zippered pocket and the main compartment includes three travel size bottles.  It comes in a number of colors.  We like the blue since it reminds us of the Hermes blue jean.  Love that color!

A SHOO-IN AFTER THE PERFECT PEDICURE

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
flexHollywood types are flipping over Flexflop’s – the perfect compact flip flops to wear after a pedicure. The fold-up sandals have graced the feet of everyone from Rhianna to Hayden Panettiere to Kim Kardashian. Thanks to the convenient shoes, those pedicures on the fly no longer will leave you high-and-not-dry!
Picture (folded) flip flops small enough to pop into your purse (or in the side pocket of the car) and powerful enough to keep you dancing until dawn.  Best of all, the clever sliding strap makes it easy for your feet to remain smudge-free when you leave the salon.
We love that they come in more than 15 signature sets (yes, we’re kind of obsessed with the embellished zipper-bags!) and most can be purchased for under $25.
Stacey Kirsch, the owner of the company came up with the product after a long night where her friend could no longer take walking in her 4-inch stilettos.  Upon seeing her pal walking barefoot, she thought a pair of emergency shoes could come in handy for everything from sore feet to pedicures.  Personally, we think she totally nailed it!

Nail-Killa-Red-lgWe so love a site called Beauty Look Book.  The woman who writes all the content is called, Sabrina.  Although Chanel is her favorite  line, she also embraces independent beauty brands.  Sabrina doesn’t just dabble in makeup, she really investigates these lines.
For instance today on the heels of Nars releasing a new mascara she did a test of five different brands.  Although she didn’t love the $30 price tag of Armani, she named it the best.
Sabrina shared with Beauty Undercover her top indie brands and they’re worth checking out:

  1. Paul & Joe – “I like Paul & Joe for their cute packaging and great natural feminine colors,” says Sabrina.
  2. Edward Bess – “This is a natural, wearable, high quality makeup that helps women achieve a look that is a better version of themselves,” she tells us.
  3. Rescue Beauty Lounge – Sabrina says this nail polish line has a color called Killa Red every woman should own because “a classic red nail polish is crucial for tips and toes.”

Overseas Beauty

leighton-meesterThe other day we found this fantastic beauty store/make-up studio in West Hollywood.  Makeup Mandy is one of those places that’s easy to drive by and miss, but don’t since it’s well worth the stop.  Clients include Avril Lavigne, Leighton Meester and Adrien Brody (no comment).
“It’s a one-stop shop,” says Juli Deveau who manages the place. “You can get everything you need from a spray tan to a pumpkin peel to lash extensions.” While they are known for doing fantastic lash extensions, it’s the products they carry that are truly amazing.  It’s like walking into a great boutique where the buyer has found great lines from around the world (that you won’t find in most US stores).   There’s the Rilastil mascara that’s huge in Italy, the Rodial Glamtox Night Cream and The All-Nighter Hair Powder.

THE GLOW

cIn the cosmetic community a brand called Jan Marini has developed a cult-like following.  From dermatologists to estheticians – this indie line is a favorite.  We personally like the vitamin C serum. Did you know 80-percent of your skin is collagen; and in order to make more collagen, you need Vitamin C?  Enter Jan Marini’s lipid-soluble C-ESTA Serum.  It’s fantastic!
The woman at the helm of the company, which bares her name, credits something called DAE Complex as the winning ingredient in C-ESTA.  “It’s one of the most powerful anti-oxidants ever discovered,” says Jan Marini. “The skin actually pulls up.” Marini developed the product to lift and tighten the muscles.  Best of all, C-ESTA Serum forms a reservoir in the skin after three days of continued application.  So if you forget to apply one tired night, your skin will still be tight and glowing.

GET THE RED CARPET GLOW

REDWith the Golden Globes a few days away we decided to enlist the help of Megan O’Brien (aka Megs.Makeup) to find out how to get that dewy, sun-kissed, red carpet look.  Meg knows all the great products the bold and the beautiful are using these days.  The makeup guru suggests we check out the following five:
1. Lorac Tantalizer- Simply apply this stuff and you’ll capture the bronze shimmer of a Hollywood A-lister. “This sweet smelling lotion will bring you to paparazzi level with less than a dime size amount on each leg,” assures Meg.
2. Aero Mineral Hydrating Mineral Shimmer in Golden $14.99 – According to Meg, Gwen Stefani uses this before every show and so should you!  Skip the primer, simply shake the tube and get ready to beautify!  Apply it while your hair is still in a towel from the shower. “Close your eyes and spray about 4″ from your face,” suggests Meg. “Then apply your normal makeup.  Use the rest on your legs and anywhere else on your body.  It gives a brilliant shimmer and glow!
3.  Cat Cosmetics Angel Glow Oscar Glow – Meg says it will make you, “A fairy goddess from a land more desired than Avatar.”  This a shimmer that won’t compete with your makeup. “It will look as though you’ve been working out, eating the proper food and getting to bed by 9pm.”
4. Fresh High Noon Fresh Face Glow – This is for those who like the natural look.  “It’s light as a feather,” Meg tells us. “With one nickel drop you look alive, rested and youthful.”
5.  Motives 10 Years Younger MAKEUP Spray - A spray that keep actresses looking crease-free and done.  “A few sprays and nothing is setting into any crevasse or laugh line,” assures Meg. “This stuff will keep your makeup as fresh 5 hours from when you first put it on!”
Check out Megs blog at www.megsmakeup.com.  Not only does she know every product on the market, but she writes about it in a witty way.  We love!

GETTING NAKED

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

KORBy Melanie McCracken
I’ve always been obsessed with smooth soft skin.  In my quest I’ve slathered, heated, rummaged in the fridge for home remedies, sat in questionable mud and wrapped my body in saran wrap. When I heard there were Korean women near downtown Los Angeles who would buff my body to its most velvety state I jumped on the opportunity and was off to Wi Spa, a co-ed traditional “Jjim Jil Bang” (translated as a “steam/sweat room”) that offers a truly unique experience, even for the most daring Angelino.
This three floor complex is split up into one male, and one female “wet spa” floors, which offers the steaming hot Jacuzzis and pore clearing steam saunas, and a co-ed floor which has an array of dry sauna rooms, lounging area for napping and a cafe.
The buff treatment, at a mere $40, is the reason for coming here though.  When you enter the women’s floor you leave behind more than your cares and worries – you’ll notice right away that every single woman is completely nude and you’re expected to strip down as well.  Come with an open mind and abandon your body complexes, after 5 minutes you’ll be blissfully stewing in a bubbling Jacuzzi waiting for your buff appointment to start.
Take my advice and go on a day where you can spare a couple of hours.  After being scoured, bathed and rinsed by the “Ddeh Dakneen Ajumma” (the women clad in black bras and underwear who will scrub off (2-lbs of your dead skin) you’ll want to linger in this huge complex, soaking up the rest and relaxation that will last you all week.
Here’s the other thing, they’re open 24 hours/7 days a week.

dryer

Have you ever heard the saying, “The higher the hair, the closer to
God?”   Well back in the day, women sat under conical dryers for hours on end,
and teased their hair silly.  Today with a little help from our friends
at Conair, our hair looks better than ever – in just a fraction of
the time.  That’s because their inexpensive Instant Heat Jumbo and
Super Jumbo Hot Rollers have streamlined our routine.  No more
laborious blow-drys, and far less heat damage to our hair!  It’s just
an easy roll and clip.  Your 15-minute investment can even last you a
good three days (with a little hair spray).  People will want to
know who did your hair!  And for the gal-on-the-go, Conair makes a pint-sized travel version
– a must for you frequent fliers!
