VOGUE’S FASHIONABLE FLUID COUPLE

Thursday, July 13th, 2017

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik grace the cover of Vogue’s August cover.  Labeled “part of a new generation embracing gender fluidity,” the couple was shot by Inez and Vinoodh, who were inspired by the gender-bending Virginia Woolf novel, Orlando.  “Orlando had become a woman,” Woolf writes, “but in every other respect, Orlando remained precisely as he had been. The change of sex, though it altered their future, did nothing whatever to alter their identity.”

Hadid and Malik represent millennials who have a blasé attitude towards sexual identification.  They borrow each other’s clothes and blur the line between masculinity and femininity.  Fashion has followed this fluidity.  According to Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain, the new generation does not want to be defined.  “You see boys wearing makeup, girls buying menswear—they are not afraid to be who they are. This category or that category—who cares? They want to define themselves.”

NARS FALLS FOR BELLA!

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017
Unveiling its edgy Fall ’17 campaign this week, French cosmetics company, NARS, revealed its latest face, Bella Hadid.  Hadid’s associations with Dior Makeup, Versus for Versace (with sister, Gigi’s, boyfriend, Zayn Malik), Max Mara accessories, and Nike prove that she is no longer just Gigi’s little sister.  Defining her thoughts on beauty with Daily Mail, Hadid, 20, says, “It is being strong and confident from the inside out. I think the most beautiful people are the ones who leave an impression on your heart from their kindness and love.”  Her beauty regime is “very simple,” she continues — washing her face, applying a mask followed by an oily serum, and drinking lots of water — are basic but beneficial.  Her inspiration, of course, has always been her mother, Yolanda Hadid Foster. “Growing up, my mom taught me about products that are good for your skin, specifically serums and oils.  She was an advocate for healthy skin and started to teach me about a proper skin routine before makeup.”

Gigi Hadid has never belied her Middle Eastern heritage.  The daughter of Palestenian immigrant, Mohamed Hadid, has been unveiled as the cover star of the first print edition of Vogue Arabia.  “In one poised photograph, she communicates a thousand words to a region that’s been waiting far too long for its Vogue voice to speak,” says the Editor-in-Chief, Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz.  On Instagram, Gigi shared, “Being half-Palestinian, it means the world to me to be on the first-ever cover(s) of @voguearabia, and I hope that this magazine will show another layer of the fashion industry’s desire to continue to accept, celebrate, and incorporate all people & customs and make everyone feel like they have fashion images and moments they can relate to.”  “The collage of countries across the Arab world are long-deserving of a place in fashion history,” declares Abdulaziz, “and there’s no better first ‘face’ to lead the charge for Vogue Arabia than Gigi, a model who defines tomorrow’s entrepreneurial and dynamic generation.”  Available on March 5 across the MENA region and international locations such as London, Paris, and Milan.
