The the early 1960s, the annual publication of the Pirelli Calendar, a trade publication for the tire manufacturer, has been known for is sultry portraits of celebrities, models, and actresses.  Shot by A-list photographers ranging from Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier, and Karl Lagerfeld, to Annie Leibovitz, Inez & Vinoohd, and Peter Lindbergh it has rarely detoured from its signature subjects, only embracing a new breed of subjects (the over-40, the accomplished, and the zaftig) during the past few years.  The 2018 45th edition may be the publication’s most exciting to date; under the direction of photographer, Tim Walker, it will feature an all-black cast portraying characters from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, styled by Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue, Edward Enninful.

Stars include, model Duckie Toth (Alice), personality RuPaul (The Queen of Hearts), actor Djimon Hounsou (The King of Hearts), model Thando Hopa (The Princess of Hearts), record producer Sean “Diddy” Combs (The Royal Beheader), model/actress Naomi Campbell (The Royal Beheader), activist Jaha Dukurek (Wonderland Princess), model Adut Akech (The Queen of Diamonds), model Slick Woods (The Mad Hatter), actress Sasha Lane (The Mad March Hare), actress Lupita Nyong’o (The Dormouse), television host Whoopi Goldberg (The Royal Duchess), and singer Zoe Bedeaux (The Caterpillar).  “Alice has been told so many times,” Tim Walker said, “and I think I wanted to go back to the genesis of the imagination behind Lewis Carroll so that you could tell it from the very beginning again. I wanted to find a different and original angle.”

In 1991, Diana, The Princess of Wales, began working with international makeup artist, Mary Grenwell, when she sat for for the December cover of Vogue with Patrick Demarchelier.  Greenwell, who works with Hollywood A-Listers Cate Blanchett, Keira Knightley, and Kate Winslet, was in awe of the iconic beauty.  But even princesses can receive a royal makeover, as revealed in UK’s Stylist Magazine.  On this particular shoot, Greenwell ditched Diana’s signature blue eyeliner.  “It made such a difference (Blue eyes should never wear blue pencil or shadow – it dulls your eyes!).” she says, adding, “From that moment on, she was open minded about trying new looks and colors!”  Regarding skincare, Greenwell refers to the princess’s routine as “sensible.”  “She would always make sure she took her make up off at the end of the day and make sure she always had a clean face before applying make up.”  Greenwell recognizes that many contemporary beauties are not so disciplined; often they lack good sleep, diet and exercise habits, adding, “After I started working with her, Diana did everything in moderation.  She cut back on drinking so that her skin was 100%.”  Greenwell believes that taking care of oneself is key in maintaining a beautiful appearance.  “If you smoke, drink or do anything to excess, you will destroy your most important beauty asset — your skin.”
