While hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Belotero®, Juvederm®, and Restylane®, are lauded for their effective results, we are often deterred by their inability to last beyond six-to-twelve months as well as the high price. However, permanent dermal fillers, such as Silikon 1000®, Artecoll®, and Aquamid®, scare us; the potential for permanent damage is often a risk we are unwilling to take. Recently, Suneva Medical, Inc. announced that Bellafill® (formerly known as ArteFill®) has now been declared the only FDA-approved dermal filler with proven “safety and effectiveness” through five years. This declaration follows a five-year post-approval study for the treatment of nasolabial folds. According to Suneva, it marks the largest and longest dermal filler study every conducted with “unprecedented retention, high patient satisfaction, and strong evidence to support the long-term safety and effectiveness of Bellafill®.”
Bellafill® is a unique, injectable collagen filler with microspheres that can instantly smooth facial wrinkles. It is the only dermal filler on the market that is approved by the FDA for the correction of nasolabial folds and moderate to severe, facial acne scars on the cheek in patients over the age of 21 years. The collagen immediately adds volume to the skin to lift and smooth away the wrinkle while the microspheres form a matrix that supports production of collagen, thus, replacing the injected collagen over time. Bellafill® is not recommended for “off-label” area use (i.e. lips, temples, etc.).
