Summertime is the best time to enjoy luscious, colorful foods and outdoor activities. But did you know that both can contribute to dark teeth-stains? Manhattan cosmetic dentist, Dr. Victoria Veytsman, official dentist to The Miss America Pageant, helps supermodels, Karlie Kloss and Hailey Baldwin, maintain their dazzling smiles. Here she shares some surprising summertime favorites which cause staining to our teeth.
Dark Berries. While they are full of antioxidants and healthy, dark berries can stain porous teeth. Be sure to wipe teeth with a tissue and rinse after eating to minimize stains. There are even wine wipes and white wipes that work to remove the stains and brighten after eating/drinking dark colored foods.
Swimming. If you swim for hours each week, you could end up with spots called “swimmer’s calculus.” The high pH of the chemicals in the pool water causes proteins to harden into a dark brown tartar. Professional whitening is required.
Popsicles. Brightly colored popsicles may be refreshing on a hot summer day, but the artificial colors stain. Make sure to brush after consuming to remove any colors.
Citrus Fruits. Lemons, oranges and grapefruits are highly acidic and can cause discoloration because they can erode tooth enamel. There are many products that support enamel from toothpastes to mouthwashes. While enamel erosion can’t be undone, you can prevent.
