Seaweed and marine extracts have long been incorporated into popular skincare remedies. They offer unparalleled hydration, accompanied by a combination of anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-aging benefits. Filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and fatty acids, seaweed is helpful in treating acne, skin allergies/rashes, burns, and wounds as well as regenerating skin and protecting it from environmental damage. From luxury potions found in Crème de la Mer, Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, to more accessible ones from Mario Badescu, The Organic Pharmacy and The Body Shop, seaweed has become an important beauty buzzword.
The latest company to make a splash in this arena is The Seaweed Bath Co. with more than 32 products derived from hand-harvested Bladderwrack Seaweed, sourced off the coast of southern Maine. The Seaweed Bath Co. is a new breed of natural cosmetics appearing on-line and in-store at retailers such as Whole Foods, Target, and CVS. While cruelty-free and absent of parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and artificial coloring, the line is constantly tweaked to give consumers the greatest efficacy. “There is no need to give up on natural products thinking they won’t be effective. Science has evolved to allow consumers to have both,” shares Kim Chisholm, the company’s chief executive officer, with WWD.
