Cuban-born hairdresser, Oribe Canales has died at 62. The legendary stylist, known professionally as Oribe, touched the locks of countless Hollywood stars from Jennifer Lopez (above), Scarlett Johansson, Cher, and Kate Hudson, to Miley Cyrus, Penelope Cruz, and Meghan Markle.  He helped define the 1990s with the gravity-defying looks worn on the runway and on countless covers by Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista.  His editorial affinity continued with subsequent generations of models, counting Gisele Bundchen, Bella Hadid, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, and Emily Ratajkowski among his devotees.  The salon-owner developed an eponymous styling line in 2008, which quickly developed a cult-like following.

Posting on Instagram, Lopez shared, “When I was 16 I was fascinated with Vogue magazine I would ride on the train and look at all the images of the supermodels and I was obsessed with the hair!! When I saw an image I loved I would check who did it and it was always someone named Oribe… Wow… he’s amazing I would think!! Cut to years later I was making my first album. I started working with Benny Medina and he said to me we have to do an album cover shoot who do you want for hair and makeup… honestly I was so new to the industry I knew no one and remembered my time flipping thru those magazines on the 6 and said ummm Oribe and Kevin Aucoin… ”  For the next ten years she spent “every walking and working moment” with Oribe by her side.

Coty Inc. (NYSE: COTY) today announced financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2018, ended March 31, 2018.   Net revenues of $2,222.7 million increased 9.4% as reported, compared to the prior year and increased 3.4%, while adjusted operating income of $227.8 million increased 9.4% from $208.3 million.  Coty CEO, Camillo Pane, attributed most of the company’s growth to the Luxury and Professional Beauty division, while “The Consumer Beauty division continued its uneven performance, but with encouraging signs of stability,” he shared.

Coty, which has recently relaunched the CoverGirl, Max Factor, and Clairol brands and acquired Burberry, ghd, and Younique Cosmetics, recently divested fourteen of its Consumer Beauty brands over the past year.  Pane explained, “We continued to reshape our growth profile by strengthening our iconic global brands, supported by recent relaunches. We are also fueling smaller brands with high growth potential and stabilizing the remaining portfolio including the conclusion of our previously communicated portfolio rationalization program.”  Regarding the sales of successful brands such as Cutex, Guess and Jennifer Lopez fragrances, he added, “This streamlining of our portfolio is an important milestone that will allow us to focus on those brands where we believe we are particularly suited to drive long term revenue growth.”

On April 26, Inglot Cosmetics will release a limited-edition makeup collaboration with Jennifer Lopez!  The singer, actress, and businesswoman is no stranger to the cosmetics business.  Her eponymous fragrance, Glow by J. Lo, generated sales of more than $100 million in 1995, spawning the launch of twenty-something additional fragrances.  Jennifer Lopez Inglot will feature seventy skus, ranging from  powders, blushes, and bronzers to lashes, shadows, mascara, and lipsticks.  According to WWD, shades will be designed in pales, nudes, golds, and shimmers, evocative of  Lopez’s signature “J.Lo Glow,” created by celebrity makeup artist, Scott Barnes.  In fact, Barnes alluded to the launch last month when he temporarily posted, “I am using a bronzer that @jlo is making its pretty amazing!”

Lopez shared, “The capsule collection we created with Inglot is filled with all my go-to products in my favorite colors. We have everything from mascara, lipsticks, eyelashes, blush, eye shadow and of course…bronzers,” adding, “What I think is unique and exciting is our Freedom System Palette—which allows you to create your own personalized palette with the specific colors and products that you need. Now you no longer have to buy that 5-piece eyeshadow kit to get the one color you really want!”  The Polish beauty company, which is believed to have generated $300 million in 2017, has more than 750 freestanding stores worldwide, yet, is relatively unknown in America.  A limited-edition palette will preview on its website on April 17th for $49.   (more…)
