Jolie LipsThe desire for full lips is not anything new. From classic bombshells like Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren to today’s stars, Margot Robbie, Angelina Jolie and Rihanna, luscious, kissable lips have never gone out of style. Social media is always buzzing with debates over models and celebrities with fuller lips. How full is too full and when does it start to look fake?  Are lip injections the solution?  “The more that celebrities admit to having lip injections and the more attention this particular procedure gets in the media, the more accessible it becomes. The danger is that the procedure is complicated. Not just anyone can do a lip augmentation,” explains board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. John Zannis.  We asked the good doctor to share his tips on achieving luscious, natural-looking lips!

Use matte liquid lipstick.  Liquid lipstick is popular because it’s easy! It goes on like a lip-gloss but dries matte on your lips like a lipstick and is nearly impossible to smear or take off without makeup remover. Liquid lipstick ideal for creating a bombshell look for night out or special occasion where you want lipstick to stay put for a long time.  Suggested brands:  ColourPop Ultra Matte Lips, NYX Matte LipstickKat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick and MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolor

Go for lip fillers.  Dr. John Zannis, who frequently works with fillers, explains that lip fillers are a great option if you want to alter the shape and volume of your lips semi-permanently. “They mostly contain hyaluronic acid, which can be injected safely in multiple sessions. The amount is easy to control by a skilled cosmetic surgeon or licensed professional, which allows you to achieve your goal gradually. The effects last around six months, at which point you may do another round of injections.” He reminds us that achieving a natural look is the goal and that over-filled cartoon mouths look distorted.

Try some cool contouring techniques.  Contouring is another awesome makeup trick to achieve a fuller look. It involves using lighter and darker shades of makeup to play up your features and give you a more defined, chiseled look. The great part is you probably have all you need in your makeup bag already.  Dr. Zannis explains that the key is to strive for facial symmetry. “If you use lip liners, glosses and other cosmetics to create a fuller look consider your other features and natural lip shape.”  There are plenty lip-contouring tutorials on YouTube for free.

Use a lip plumper.  Lip plumpers are great in that they are easy to use, are non-invasive, work fast and are affordable. They’re typically infused with lip tingling ingredients like cinnamon, pepper and peppermint which leads to an instant yet slight swelling.  Suggested brands:  Patricia Wexler M.D. No Injection Lip Plumper, Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme, and DuWop Original Lip Venom

Oblong TorsoThe hourglass figure, characterized by a waist that is narrower than the width of a woman’s breasts and hips, conjures images of classic Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Jayne Mansfield.  Today’s A-listers, however, have lost many of their curves, in favor of a more androgynous square or oblong shape.  Marked by rock-hard abs, often fueled by pilates, yoga, and extreme dieting, this ultra-lean body shape, sported by Cameron Diaz (left), Kate Hudson (center), and Gwyneth Paltrow (right), appears to have developed as womens’ fitness has become more focused on strength, often emulating male ideals.

But is this evolution healthy?  According to celebrity personal trainer, James Duigan, founder of London’s exclusive Bodyism gym, “Often a six-pack is not healthy, for women in particular. It’s a biological thing,” he explains. Yet, the fact that not everyone is able achieve this look only makes it more desirable.  “It’s a lot to do with body type, meaning that’s just how it is for some people. For others, no matter how much they exercise, they will retain their waist,” Duigan adds.  So why not embrace the curves a la Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson, and Christina Hendricks?  Perhaps its backlash from Kim Kardashian-West and Nicki Minaj, whose hyper-curved physiques have almost become cartoonish.

2016 is going to be a banner year for the Pirelli Calendar.  Rather than featuring nude or semi-nude pinups, the latest edition will feature women of substance who are, for the most part, fully-clothed.  Models will include some familiar faces — Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, Serena Williams, Fran Lebowitz, and Amy Schumer — as well as philanthropist, Agnes Gund, money manager, Mellody Hobson, filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, artist, Shirin Neshat, producer, Kathleen Kennedy, and actress, Tavi Gevinson.

According to Pirelli:  The Calendar: 50  Years and More, the notoriously exclusive work was first published in 1964.  Reserved for important clients and VIPs, it was originally designed as “an eye-popping advert for their high-quality products, a freebie that would be proudly displayed and obsessed over year-round by their target market.”  Famous faces who have graced its pages have included, Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid, Cindy Crawford, Penélope Cruz, Milla Jovovich, Heidi Klum, Sophia Loren, and Kate Moss.
