Valorie Kondos Field ( or “Miss Val,” as she’s affectionately known by the scores of champion gymnasts she’s coached over her career) has no background in gymnastics. She never tumbled, flipped, or played any type of organized sport. And yet she has been able to craft a legendary, hall of fame coaching career through curiosity, creativity, attention to detail, and unwavering care for the overall well-being of her athletes.  Miss Val, the UCLA Athletic coach of 7 NCAA Championship Teams, 22-time Regional and 18- time Pac 12 Champion UCLA Women’s Gymnastics teams, has shaped her UCLA Gymnastics program as a life skills class.  Now she shares stories and lessons-learned throughout her career in her new book, Life Is Short, Don’t Wait To Dance.

For Miss Val, it’s not about winning and losing, it’s about choreographing your life and owning the choices you make.  Included are Miss Val’s favorite memories of her mentor, legendary basketball coach John Wooden, unforgettable stories of the Olympians and athletes with whom she has worked, and how her approach to her breast cancer diagnosis made that struggle into one of the best years of her life. “I have found life is much more fun when I stop waiting to see what it hands me and instead take charge without a concern about what’s deemed normal,” Kondos Field shares.  “I invite you to be intentional with your choices and to choreograph your life one choice at a time.”

Head Coach for UCLA Women’s Gymnastics Program, Valorie Kondos Field, known affectionately as “Miss Val,” has guided and influenced thousands of student-athletes, including Olympic champions, Simone Biles, Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross, and Madison Kocian.  With multiple NCAA Championships titles and twenty-six years of coaching experience, the Pac-12 “Coach of The Century” recently faced her biggest challenge outside of the gymnasium: fighting and surviving breast cancer.  During BCA Miss Val worked on the CBS television special Jump Jive & Thrive (airing on October 21st), honoring cancer survivors and Thrivers.  In the face of adversity, Miss Val has always adhered to her positive outlook, which has resonated profoundly with her students, athletes, and fans.  Now she shares her Eight Secrets For Championship Beauty with Beauty Undercover!

1) DO YOU!  “Don’t aspire to be someone else,” warns Miss Val.  “You will always be a second rate ‘Them,’ and worse you will never achieve a first rate ‘You.'”

2) CLEAN FUELING WITH MIND, BODY & SOUL  There’s a lot of talk about “clean eating”‘ vs dieting.” Clean eating is fueling our bodies with pure and natural nutrients. “The same should be true of our minds and souls,” Miss Val suggests. “When we choose ‘clean’ thoughts and daily practices of rejuvenation we feel lighter and refreshed in spirit.”

3) GRATITUDE  Miss Val begins each day with a steam of gratitudes, starting with “Yay ~ I get another day!” Make it a habit to “recognize and acknowledge moment-by-moment gratitudes,” she suggests.
